What Makes Our Somali Classes Different

We don’t just teach Somali  we help children reconnect with their language, confidence, and identity.
Every class nurtures pride in who they are and helps them speak Somali naturally with family and friends.

Real Speaking Practice

From the very first class, your child will speak Somali out loud — not just repeat words. Every lesson builds confidence through games, stories, and real conversations that grow week by week.

Built for Kids in the West

Our lessons are made for children who understand English better than Somali. We make learning fun, culturally relevant, and full of connection to their roots — even if they’re starting from zero.

We know parents are busy, so our one-hour-a-week lessons are easy to manage and designed for real progress. With clear routines and interactive homework, children stay consistent and motivated all year round.

Frequently Ask Questions (FAQ)

What age groups are the classes for?

We offer three age groups to make sure each child learns at the right pace:

  • 5 to 7 years old

  • 8 to 11 years old

  • 12 to 17 years old (segregated for boys and girls)

Each lesson helps your child develop all areas of Somali — speaking, reading, writing, and listening. They’ll learn how to introduce themselves, hold simple conversations, build vocabulary, and understand grammar naturally through guided practice.

For younger children (ages 5–7), we recommend parents stay nearby during the first few lessons just to help them get used to the class routine. After that, most children can follow along independently. For older groups, no parent supervision is required.

That’s completely fine — many of our students start with little or no Somali. The teachers guide them step-by-step, using visual aids, repetition, and fun speaking activities to build understanding and confidence from scratch.

Fluency takes time, and these classes aren’t designed to make a child fluent straight away. The goal is to build a strong foundation so your child can start using Somali naturally with family and friends outside of class. With regular attendance and practice, most students quickly begin understanding and speaking more confidently.

All classes are live and interactive, taught via Zoom by experienced Somali teachers. Recordings are sent after each lesson in case your child misses a class or wants to revise.

Each class is one hour long, combining speaking practice, reading, writing, and listening in every session.

We keep class sizes small with a maximum of 12 students per group — so every child gets individual attention and speaking practice.

We teach standard Somali (Maxaa tiri dialect), which is widely understood across all Somali regions. It’s taught with a neutral accent to ensure your child can communicate clearly with anyone.

Yes. After every class, parents receive the same learning materials used in the lesson, so you can review and practise with your child at home. We also share regular feedback and updates to track your child’s progress.
